How to Write an Impressive Cover Letter to a Publishing Editor

You’ve completed your manuscript -- the Sunday paper post, a short write-up or even an e-book -- but with luck, you don’t feel lost for your words just yet. At this point, you have to write a cover letter so as to provide your article to a publisher.

In the realm of writing, this type of cover letter is known as a query letter. Be informational, slight sales pitch, your letter should review your article and then sell it as a great fit with the publisher’s market. Also, you should explain your experience and show passion for your career, every single step of the way.

·
Start your cover letter with a powerful statement of concept, an appealing story or even another “hook” that will certainly seize the editor’s interest. As an author, you surely are good at this matter but don't forget that the editor doesn't know about your article. Therefore your starting phrases must properly and precisely hook the heart and soul of your work.
·
Segue to the headline of your article and an explanation of what it's about. You have to simply condense your whole article into a couple of lines so that your entire letter will fit one page, so smack the top points while showing the reason and firmness of your article. Opt for precise and energetic words and phrases, in case you don’t show excitement for your article; the publisher may ask why he should. Say thanks to the publisher for his valuable time and consideration and mention that you will be looking forward to his feedback.

Make sure to review and revise your letter. Publishers are very known to dump whole piece if your cover letter has a single misspelling. Although this kind of response may hit you on your head, there's some fact in their anxiety that if you send a “sloppy” cover letter, then you may possibly submit a poor article.

What many aspiring writers forget to do is to include their personal details at the bottom of the cover letter. I know this may be a simple error, but unless the publisher knows how to find you, she will not be able to respond to you.
